The Student Visa process can be confusing and time consuming (especially for first time travelers). The most important thing to realize is that if you are going to Canada for a semester or longer....

YOU NEED A STUDENT VISA

You cannot travel to Canada as a tourist and expect to study as a full time student, as that is considered a violation of a "tourist" visa. Nor does being a student in the US mean you automatically receive a "student visa".

Conditions of the Student Visa

  • you must take a full study load
  • you must take out the compulsory Overseas Student Health Coverage (* OSHC)
  • you must maintain good standing at the Canadian institution.

    Quick List

  • students must have a valid passport
  • students must have proof of official documentation from the Canadian school For US citizens wanting to travel and stay up to three months, Canada joined the U.S. Visa Waver Pilot Program in July 1996. An Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is a form of electronic tourist visa that can be issued through travel agents or through the airline directly. This option can be used for family and friends wanting to visit a student in Canada. In some cases, usually time constraint cases, ETA's can be issued to students with the mandate of changing that visa to a student visa while in Canada.

US citizens can contact the Canadian Consulate in Los Angeles, the Embassy in Washington DC or the AEO for application forms or check with their home institution or program sponsor. Australian students must contact the Canadian High Commission in Ottawa for more details.

  • Which Assessment Level Am I ?? If you are a US citizen you are Assessment Level 1 or 2. If you are a citizen of another country and currently in the US on a valid residency/student visa please consult DIMA website and view their informational page... look for Country Assessment Levels.

Canada’s Student visa programme provides for the entry of overseas students who wish to undertake full-time study in registered courses in Canadian.Work rights for students have been made available so that students can supplement their income, rather than it being their sole source of funds. Work rights are limited to 20 hours per week while their Canadian institution is in session – no limits exist while the institution is not in session.

How do I apply for a Student visa?

You will need to fill out form 981i* - Applying in Canada for a Student Visa, which can be found on the Canadian Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs’ website at http://www.immi.gov.au/

How can I work while I study?

Students applying for Student visa for the first time will not be automatically granted permission to work in Canada. Students may only apply for a visa with work rights after they arrive in Canada and the student has commenced his/ her course of study. The charge for this is AUD$50.

Can I extend my stay in Canada? How?

Students can extend their stay in Canada by applying for a new visa before your current visa expires. To extend your student visa without changing the conditions of your visa, you must apply on form 157Y.
